Access to the Bay is via the lock which is available to boat users 24 hours a day 365 days a year. You can request an inbound or outbound passage through the locks via VHF Radio Channel 18, call sign ‘Barrage control’ or can contact them on 02920 700234.

Outbound locks run on the hour and half hour and inbound locks on the quarter past and quarter to the hour. Please be sure to observe and comply with the light signals displayed.

Traffic Lights are located on each of the three locks and on the Northern breakwater which coordinates entry to the Outer Harbour. Light Signals are as follows:

Three Vertical Flashing Red = Emergency: Stop and Contact Barrage Control

Three Vertical Red = Do not enter lock

Three Vertical Green = Enter Lock

Green, White, Green = Enter Lock on instruction from Barrage Control
